200th anniversary of Charles Dickens
Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, England, on February 7 1812. He died in Kent, England, on June 9 1870. Dickens was the most popular novelist of the century, and one of the greatest humorists that England has produced.
Although a writer from the Victorian era, Dickens’s work transcends his time, language and culture. His writings continue to inspire film, TV, art, literature, artists and academia.
When Charles was two years old, his father moved the family to London.His father ,John Dickens was arrested for debt and was imprisoned in the Marshalsea prison along with the rest of the family except Charles.
At the age of 12 years, Charles was put to work in Warren's Blacking factory in order to clear some of his father's debts. Nearly four months after his arrest, Charles' father was released from prison and the family returned to Camden Town. Charles was sent to school where he studied until he was15.
Charles' first chosen career was as a journalist. He also acted as a parliamentary reporter during the 'Reform Bill' legislation.
From 1842, Charles and his family began to travel throughout the world,initially visiting Canada and the United States. He later travelled to Italy, Switzerland and France. Charles died on June 9th 1870.

As a young man Charles Dickens worked for nearly four years as a newspaper reporter working on court cases and legal proceedings. This experience found its way into many of his books.
Charles Dickens and his wife Catherine had ten children. Many of them were named after famous writers.
Many of Charles Dickens' books were printed in magazines in serial form before being published in book format. Unlike other authors who finished their stories before the magazines printed them, Dickens often wrote each episode as they were being serialized. This meant that his stories had a rhythm which kept the reader looking forward to the next episode, just like a modern day TV series.
One of Charles Dickens' daughters was named Dora after the character in his book David Copperfield. The real Dora died tragically of an illness just like the Dora in the book.
